Does anyone know any long time DJs that added or swiched to karaoke that have become successful?

I don't know of any DJ, who later added karaoke, that was very successful with the karaoke. They typically don't invest what is required.
I don't know of any KJs that don't sing, but like Sandy, I know a few who shouldn't. Sadly these are the ones who think they're fabulous and sing three times a round.

My point is...I don't think they have the commitment level required to do karaoke. If it's an add-on. That makes it apparent. I have heard about their lack of karaoke music investment.
A DJ would have a good knowledge of music, but no experience with the mixing process. There is no mixing involved in spinning. They do other things we don't like beat matching and cross fading.
It just sounds like something they needed to do to make themselves more marketable. Karaoke isn't a passion, to them it's an extra add-on. They would have no need to build a crowd and a steady night out of it. Since most of them specialize in weddings and parties. It's something more to offer. I have karaoke, if you will only hire me if I do.

As far as equipment & music goes...karaoke is much more expensive. I don't have any lighting as most DJs. But they pay less for music. I have expensive microphones they don't need.

DJs have different areas of expertise. A dance club DJ isn't a wedding DJ. A good bar DJ is different than a dance club DJ.
KJs are only concentrating in one area. KJing is all the same. Unless you choose to be a KJ/DJ. And at that they are only song players between the karaoke. Not a qualified DJ to any extent.
