I am going to be buying a new laptop in the next day or so. I was wondering if anyone new How you can tell if the disc drive that comes with the laptop will play CDG's?
There's no way of knowing for sure. This is something very few drive manufacturers mention in a drive's specs. You will just have to install CDG disc playing software, like a demo copy of Power CD+G Player Pro, on the laptop and try out the disc drive.
If they list the specks for the drive or if you can find them somewhere (ask the maker) look for CD+G in the list of everything it will play. If it doesn't say it, it probably doesn't play it. You can always use an external drive with the CD+G capability.

If only this were true. The fact is that CD+G support is rarely mentioned in any CD or DVD drive's specs or features even in those that are commonly used for reading and writing the CD+G format. I once tried to compile a list of disc drives that supported CD+G by contacting many of the drive manufacturers. Only Plextor would assure me that some of their drive models had this capability. All the others told me that either they didn't think so or simply no. I actually got into a heated debate with an HP tech who stated as a matter of fact that NONE of their drives could read or right the CD+G format while I had an HP drive installed in my computer at that moment that had been used to read and write many CD+G discs.
