Hacking Karaoke

Post by rdubwilkins »

Hey all! I'm doing an art piece involving karaoke. I don't know too much about the hardware of karaoke, I only know what I've seen in my research, going into karaoke bars the last few weeks.

The idea is to have a karaoke setup, a KJ, and have people in the audience come up and sing karaoke. The catch is we'd ideally like to "hack" the karaoke setup live and change out pop culture lyrics with text from other sources.

The piece has to be technologically based and interactive, as opposed to a passive art experience where the observer can only stand and look at a distance. The hacking element will serve to reinforce the juxtaposition of a socially light-hearted, and fun experience with subject matter which is in contrast, much more serious.

How would we go about pulling something like this off?

Thanks much,
-Robert

Please explain exactly what you mean by "hack the karaoke setup live".

Sounds to me like he wants to ad-lib the words to the songs.

Like a Hip/Hop convention or version of American Idol.

He wants to chnage the lyrics live to whatever he wants in place of the original lyircs. Something I would never do to my singers.
