Just starting out....

Post by sassymmmy »

Hi Everyone. I'm a Mother of 4 and have never really done any Karaoke. Growing up we always sang along to the music, but not like this. My children however have caught the Karaoke bug! I'm not interested in huge compilations or equipment atm, just more of a starting point for little kids to get up and perform to thier hearts content.

Looking around I see all sorts of disks I can buy, but my kids are only interested in 1 or 2 of the songs. I've been researching "Pay by title" places, but I will admit to being totally lost and confused as to what I need to do to download certain songs, and burn them to a CD to give my son as a Christmas present with all his favorite songs on it.

I've heard great things about PowerKaraoke, I'm just not sure of anything really. ANY help at all to get something up and going for a Christmas present would be WONDERFUL!

I can see already that this forum is definetly going to be going up on my fav's list. Thanks for any advice you can impart!

Hi sassymmmy and welcome to the forum. Yes, kids definitely love karaoke. It's great entertainment for them also. It is a problem with the karaoke discs and having to buy songs you really don't want. You can buy individual songs via download but there are limited song titles available (compared to karaoke discs) at this time.

The songs you download from places like TriceraSoft are in the MP3+G format. These are exactly like the song tracks found on karaoke CDG discs. Power CD+G Burner is a very easy to use program for burning these songs to a CDR that will play in any standard karaoke CDG player.

Have you chosen a karaoke machine yet?

Please feel free to ask any specific questions.

I ordered a custom karaoke disc last night from mycdg (dot) com

They have access to songs from Sound Choice, Music Maestro and a few others...you search by artist.

You get a CD+G disc with the songs you pick, in the mail. Then you can rip it to a computer or copy the disc...strictly for back up purposes....

The two problems I have with mycdg.com are the prices (3 or 4 dollars per song) and the fact that you cannot mix song brands on the same disc.

Yeah this is the one issue I had too. That and I couldnt find a bunch of the songs I wanted. I downloaded the trial version of Power Karaoke CD+G Creater. It seemed to do what I want it to. So im going to get that and the Burner one. I think for now my kids will enjoy more singing WITH the vocals in the background. I tried it with one of their favorite songs, How Bad Do You Want It by Tim McGraw. While I couldnt save it on the trial version to see how it would look all finished....what I did see gives me hope! Once they've had a while to play with it like that, I'll try the Voice Reducer? I think it's called to try to get rid of the vocals. Any thoughts?

I'm still trying to find the Karaoke machine I bought. I put it in a VERY safe place until Christmas. It's just a cheap thing I got at Fry's for $30. If my kids take off with this, I'll probably get one that will interface with my stereo reciever so they can listen to themselves in Surround Sound. lol What do you think?

Would suggest keeping the karaoke and the surround sound system separate from each other as the stereo receiver and it's speakers aren't designed for live vocals.

Yeah the price is a little high, but I found songs on there that you can not find anymore because the discs are discontinued. So paying for a song you can not get anymore can be ...priceless....

So you have to get seperate discs for different song companies...still better than buying all the discs it would take to get the songs you want.
