Vocal Harmonizer Question

I know that most folks who use a vocal harmonizer use it with a guitar. Apparently, the harmonizer recognizes the chords used and sets the harmonies accordingly. I was wondering if there were any harmonizers that worked for a vocalist without an instrument.

They have them, but nobody uses them at karaoke shows.

Usually if the original song had background singers in it, the karaoke disc companies put them in their version. So it's not necessary to use a harmonizer.
