Smells Fishy....

Post by Bigdog »

Tonight just as I arrived at the job a little over an hour early, there were several people just sitting down at the tables in front of where I set up. There were at least 8-10 people. I even helped them push 3 tables together for them and they thanked me....

As I start bringing in the equipment, some of the guys start playing video golf... So I keep bringing in my equipment. They are not in my way and I'm not bothering them.

They are still playing after my last load. The first thing I do is run my coax cable behind the golf game and infront of the dart board and connect to the A/B switch screwed on the wall beside the dart board. I tell one if the guys I need to run this wire and it will only take a few seconds. He tells the guys to hold up so I can run the wire. They were even joking as I did it saying they were there to sing a lot of karaoke. I joked back saying they were scaring me. It takes 10 seconds to do this wire connection, totally.

Now as I'm setting things up I hear one of the ladies talking loud enough for me to hear about how they were recommended to come to my karaoke show. Not talking to me, but I can hear her. Fishy Point #1.

As I continue my setup one of the guys comes over and asks if a I have a certain song (Which I never heard of.) I said I don't know and I'll have to do a search for it. He asks if I'm disc based or databased. I said data...as he is looking at my closed laptop.

It takes almost an hour (at least 45 minutes if I hurry) to finish my set up.

I continue setting up as usual. One lady is looking though my book. After a few minutes I can hear her telling the other lady he doesn't have .....this and this and this...They are sounding like I'm a loser KJ. Fishy Point #2

So as I go to the mens room to change my shirt I make it a special point to hand them my book containing all the updates I've added in the last few years. They start looking through it.

I came out and finished more set up. I put the 4 TVs on the karaoke channel. Now they are talking about going to another karaoke bar some other place. It's now 1/2 hour before I'm scheduled to start I normally start 15 minutes before 10 (my scheduled time.) I go over near the one bartender and she tells me I should try to start early because she heard them talking about leaving. I agreed because I heard them too. Now we have to get the manager to shut off the house music. Which ends up taking a few minutes. In the meantime half the group gets up and leaves.... When I finally start singing the first song only 3 people from the group are left.

I had some other singers so I go over and talk to the rest of the group. Here is where it really started to stink. I asked them what they wanted to sing.....kissing their a$$....One guy says we don't sing the singers left. He says they talked to or called the bar and talked to someone about what time the karaoke started. One person told them 10 O'clock. I have always started at 9:45 just for the record. But the signs say 10 o'clock so the bartender or whomever they talked to would have be correct in saying 10 o'clock but it's really 9:45.

Then he says they talked to someone else and they told them I start at 9 o'clock. Now I have conflicting reports. So I happend to have given them one of my calenders already before everyone left. I clearly have marked on each date what time my show starts. I point this out to the remaing 3 people. It says 10 Fridays and 9:30 on Saturdays. Now if they think I start at 9 o'clock I'm 40 minutes late in starting. Making it look like I'm a JERK KJ.

But I'm not starting 40 minutes late, I'm actually starting 20 minutes early.

He proceeds to tell me those people that left are really good singers. I tell him I attract good singers. Then he says they have 2 birthdays that's why they were here and their regular dive bar down the road had a band tonight instead of karaoke. So now they were going to meet the others at some other dive bar karaoke show.

We talked a little more and one guy put my calender in his pocket.

So after hearing all this I go to the manager to tell her what I learned. She tells me they told the bartender I interruppted them while they played the golf game. Like it was a MAJOR interruption. And I was rude and acted like I didn't want to help them find the song they wanted to know if I had.

Remember my computer wasn't even fired up yet and he saw this. I can't search for a song without using the computer. Looking through all the books and updates would take forever.

My final conclusion after putting all the different stories and excuses together is a s follows.

I think they may have a KJ friend that wants my job. I further think they had NO REAL INTENTION of staying to sing one song. I think it was a big show to be there and act like I was a total jerk and made them leave . I expect the manager will get a call tomorrow complaining about the jerk KJ.

I think it was a setup from the get go.

The only good thing about it so far is..one of the guys commented to me about how well organized I was and how nice and serious my equipment looked. I'll see where this goes but for now...I smell something fishy.

Think about it...by the time they get to sing their first song at any other bar it would have been at least 10 or later depending on when they get in the other rotation. The remaining 3 did stay for a few singers and they also commented on their talent. They heard the system and it sounded good, so again I'll see what happens, but I don't really care if they ever come back....

Story Update:

I knew this story didn't make sense...

Yesterday the new manager asked me about the customers complaint. I explained what happened and the only part of the story he heard was from the bartender about me interrupting their game and being RUDE. I told him what the other people in the party said about the start time issue, he hadn't heard that part. I told his other manager that part of the story....JERKs...

I also showed him how long it took to run the wire to interrupt the game. 13 seconds and I took my time.

Tonight a friend (semi regular karaoke singer) of the party came in. He told me he sent them. They said they left because NOBODY was there. 45 minutes before my scheduled start time...I guess not. I don't know where they go to karaoke where everyone sleeps overnight to get a good spot ...

I didn't tell him what they said I was too busy tonight with 30 singers. I'm debating whether I should tell him or not.

If they stay away that's a good thing. Because I'm not Kissing their A$$ about anything like their KJ probably does. Don't accuse me of stuff that didn't happen.... and then expect me to be all nice and friendly...
