Economy and Crowd Size

Post by Bigdog »

At my shows there are ups and downs lately. I think most of these are due to the summer season not the ecomony.

I'm hoping that soon the crowds will get a little bigger and steady again.

I'm not sure this will be maintained if we go into a double dip recession.

Has anyone else noticed a summer downturn? Or economy reduction?

After an extensive conversation with one of my bar owners, he feels the economy is not hurting his business which is on coarse to make more than last year. He has seen 3 years of steady growth.

One bit of info surprised me.

My karaoke nights are rivaling his saturday which is not up to expectations. But there is also other info. The saturday night DJ seems to be doing well but it's the dinner crowd that is not as good dragging down the numbers for the entire day and he doesn't understand why. We both have agreed it's not an ecomony issue but can't put a finger on the reason. Whether it's competition from other eateries or something else.

I would be more inclined to think it's a summer home picnic/party weekend thing. Hanging around the pool with close friends and relatives. Which has more to do with weather than economics.

I'm really waiting for the mid september weeks to see if the economy does anything to the crowds.

I think the economy will go down lower still. If it does I expect crowd fluctuations to lower with a lose of some regulars. Christmas will be another matter.

Does anyone believe the spin coming out of Washington about how wonderful the economy is doing?

This news comes from a local banker..not a bank clerk...someone up the food chain.... This is not a joke...

She says banks don't trust other banks right now. This is why it takes longer for checks to clear.

She also said to take all of your money out of the bank. She took all her money out in cash and put it in a safe in her house.

Lucky for me....I started out with nothing and I have most of it left.

As much as I would like to say I'm wrong  I think his saturday dinner crowd dropping off happens to be a result of the saturday night DJ advertising hip hop music.

Normal family guys that want to take the family out to dinner on saturday night are going to avoid this place like the plague. I know it would keep me and my family out.

I believe there is actually a way to prove my idea. I'm going to talk to the bar owner about it. I think he can pull up the sales data on his computer. Look at the data and see if the crowds dropped when he started doing hip hop night.

I know what he's going to find....

AS A BAR OWNER...you can not be all things to all people. Make up your mind about the type of business and business reputation you want. Do everything to make that your reputation and STOP doing stupid things to kill that reputation. You will never be able to cater to every single type of persons needs. So go for the majority that falls into the reputation you invision for your business. Leave the rest for the next guy.

One more thing. The DJ is doing well on that night.

Here comes the hard part....either you keep the DJ and take the hit on your reputation with the family dining crowd or you dump the DJ for something that is more along the lines of buildng the dinner crowd and maintaining your good family reputation.

It's a business decision that could make the difference between success or failure.

What would you decide? Which is more important?

Well the story gets more interesting...he thinks the dinner crowd started shrinking when they started having bands on Saturday. (It's that cover charge for bands issue.) He's going to wait until the middle of October to see how things are going. I would agree that making any decision based on summer crowds is not a good idea.

But on another issue..we waited for the 3rd quarter of the exibition football game before starting karaoke which made some singers upset.

Can not be all things to all people. Robbing Peter to pay Paul and then wanting the money back from both of them.
