I am proud to present a link to a video from a singing contest I competed in this past Wednesday. At your convenience, I invite you to take a look.

In case your wondering... I didn't win; which may give you an insite as to the caliber of the competition. There is a karaoke track in the background; the band is playing along as well.

One of my regulars just won a trip to Vegas to compete in national finals. The winner gets a CD package and a chance to open for a big name act.

Hey! They recalled me for an additional try during a "Wild Card" round. Which means they thought we all deserved a second chance. This one includes a and interview in the beginning and the judges comments at the end. Note that in the original attempt, the judges implied that I should sound like myself and not Neil Diamond. well..., just listen to what they have to say after this performance :?

Was this a live band karaoke singing contest?

Did you get to practice with them at all?

I actually had the option to sing with the band (who are quite talented) only, but I didn't have the sheet music so I opted for a combination using the backing track. There were no word lyrics available to read either.

Had the backing track in the background, with the band accompanying as well. The only rehearsal each of us had was one time through a couple of hours prior to the show. Basically It gave me an opportunity to prepare for when a band member might hit a note or chord that I wouldn't ordinarily hear.

Whenever someone asks my advice about what to sing at a contest I always tell them to sing what they think they sing best and to forget about what they think the crowd or judges want to hear.

Of course this is after I caution them about even entering the contest.

I recently was asked that very thing a few weeks ago by several people.

My advice was no advice. There is no way for me to know the type of crowd for that venue or the caliber of the judges to judge. The judging formats are all different. The bar owner/KJ could be running a crocked contest. It could turn into a beauty contest instead of a singing contest. It might be based on how many friends the singer can have in the audience. It could be based on who's a regular parton and who isn't. It could be based on judges that don't like the type of music you picked.

Fast song or slow song, country or pop, rock or rap...who the hell knows...I don't and I'm not even going to pretend I do. :?

Really just don't ask me because I really don't have a clue.

I had a new singer ask me tonight if they sing a lot of Skynyrd here.

It really doesn't matter because you're going to sing it no matter what I say anyway...right??? So sing it.

My standard answer to that question is as follows. SING WHATEVER YOU WANT. I DON'T CARE. I'll keep the crowd entertained  ...
