There is something very wrong with this picture. We are victims of our paid for antivirus programs.
VIRUS ALERT
It wouldn't surprise me that the biggest virus creaters are the antivirus gurus. 
Look we are the first ones to have a fix for the XYZ virus that just started when we hit send....
You won't be scared into buying one if there were never any threats.
So we attack your computer and we can fix it. Just like the Rogue Trojans. Funny how it can identify the attacker in an instant but it can't stop it or the damage or stop itself from being turned off.

I can't even get to the malwarebytes site. I keep getting redirected to other junk sites.
A virus is smart enough to to that????? And antivirus programs can't stop it?????
My only option very shortly will be a complete computer backup and reload.
Keeping one computer for only web surfing is the only way to protect anything. Use another computer that never hits the web for all your other work. Take the info you need from the web computer and transfer it to the work computer after you scan it.
With one web computer if it gets infected just restore it again. You lose no info and get a new clean fast computer again.
My fire wall was turned off my malware program won't open right. I can't even access their site. AVG won't let me start a scan.
The only thing working remotely right is Spyware Doctor. But it has been having moments.
There have been many times that there were no virus updates available from the antivirus sites.
Think about this...new viruses are being created ever minute by jerks. So why would there be days.....(days?) without new virus updates to prevent them. The antivirus programs are way behind these things. There should at the very least, be an update everyday with new threat protection.

There's absolutely no point in bitching about antivirus programs here, because what you have isn't a virus.
It's Malware, designed to get your browser preferences for advertising purposes, etc.
As I said in an earlier post, Smitfraudfix is absolutely brutal but it WILL get rid of your Malware problem.
Have you tried to boot into SAFE mode and run Malwarebytes?
Running in SAFE mode usually prevents Malware becoming "Resident", i.e. in memory so that no matter what you do, the program remains active.

I went to the site and downloaded it to my desktop. It won't open. It asks me what program to open it with. I use the internet explorer and I can get to the run screen. I hit the run button and nothing happens. It sits there and asks me what program I want to use to open it and it keeps repeating.

It's an Executable, it opens itself.
Please do not take offense, but are you sure you downloaded the correct file?
Please note at the top of the download page is states for WinXP and Win2K.
It should be named SmitfraudFix.exe and be 1.78Mb in size. Check the file properties, particularly the extension.
Running this should open a DOS box (black screen) on your PC headed C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe
It will take a few seconds before the program runs and the screen goes blue.

P.S. as for whether I have "any more ideas that don't work", I could simply stop trying to help you out of this situation, altogether. Having a pop at people attempting to assist you isn't a good way forward.

Safe mode is a recommendation. It always used to work for me in Standard mode, and then I would run it again in Safe mode.
Option 1 simply provides a record of problems on your PC
Option 2 does the "clean" operation.
Option 5 just gives slightly more effectiveness.
