This all looks pretty cheesy to me. Why would Sunfly need to use MySpace, FaceBook, and YouTube? What do the rest of you think?

I haven't looked and I don't want to.

In bad economic times desperate people will jump on it for a $10 prize.

In bad economic times a desperate disc company would do it to sell $10 worth of discs.

Any karaoke contest signals things aren't going well.

Total waste of bandwidth, IMHO.

As a UK member of the forum, I've got to say it seems a bit pathetic that a company of Sunfly's renown has bothered with something like this.

It sounds almost as bad as "reality TV" that clutters up our screens over here and which I usually call "vomit" TV.

Utterly boring with a bunch of jumped up posers pratting about on screen and that's just the panel "judges", never mind the dross that purports to be talent they have on.

With any luck, it will die without trace and never be heard of again.

I'm not sure that this is officially sanctioned by Sunfly. I'd be surprised if it was.

Given the original posters "Nomme de Plume", it would certainly appear to be from a Sunfly source???

Of course that means nothing. You can create any username you want. If this an official Sunfly production then I have officially lost a lot of respect for Sunfly.

Using the "Hollywood" mantra....it doesn't matter whether anyone says anything good or bad about you....at least they are talking about you.

It's still publicity.

It's the real deal . . . Here's the reply I got from Coco Thaddeus of Sunfly

"Thank you for your email regarding our competition. The competition is ours and, along with the social network pages, is something we have set up with a view to keeping the company fresh in the digital era.

. . .

I am aware that the competition has caused some controversy on one forum in particular, and I assure you that the competition has been set up for fun, not because the company is in any sort of trouble. The prizes are relatively small in comparison to some other competitions as there are prizes each month, leading up to a larger prize in the December final, along with the title of "Sunfly Karaoke Singer of the Year 2010"."
Last week, I went to Philadelphia, but it was closed.

Thanks for the info Moonrider. If Sunfly is going to do something like this they could at least make it look professionally done.

I have no interest either way in any type of singing contest and it doesn't matter who's running it.

From my experiences with karaoke shows...when the crowds aren't coming in the first thing the bar owner or the loser KJ wants to do is a karaoke contest. While even I'll admit they work at bringing in bodies...EVERYTHING IS GREAT....UNTIL THE MONEY IS GONE... Then everything retuns back to normal...EXCEPT FOR THE PEOPLE THAT GOT MAD AND STOPPED COMING because they didn't win or some other imaginary indescretion. This doesn't include the bad publicity from those people telling everyone about their grievances. Real or imaginary. The long term fallout is never worth the brief excitement phase.

Since they are in a way trying to create exposure for their product, they could face the same problems from unhappy wannabe winners.

Giving away discs or money or whatever that anyone/everyone could win is a better promotion. I suggest this to every bar owner that thinks a singing contest is the end all answer. Give stuff away that everyone has an equal chance to win. Not just a limited group. Singers are always the minority part of the crowd. EVEN a giveaway is only really good until it ends.

I check my email everyday because of the Publisher's Clearing House $10,000,000 Giveaway. After it's gone my interest in emails from them will go untouched. I'm not buying anything from them (PCH) now and I still won't be after the money's gone.

There are millions of people that will have an interest in this type of contest. The eternal search for fame and fortune. Whether it translates into a gigantic surge in sales, will remain to be seen. The point is the greatest interest may come from people trying to gain fame and not from potential disc buyers. After the contest is over the traffic will drop like a rock. The contest is FREE, discs cost them money.

I realize the business climate today calls for some type of action for survival reasons. The contest is another form of advertisement.

DISCLAIMER: I consider myself an expert in building karaoke crowds in bars.... not an expert in karaoke discs sales.

Good Luck.
