Karaoke: Non-entertainment!!!???

Post by Bigdog »

I'm sick of this and I want it to change, so how can we do it?

We have a local "entertainment guide" that comes in the newspaper. Listings are free so that could be part of the problem. But if they need the room for other notices or paid ads, karaoke is always the first listing dropped. Karaoke doesn't matter delete it.

Why is a bar having karaoke any less of an entertainment form than a band playing acoustic music or classical music or easy listening or country or rock? Or a dance or comedy or jazz or rhythm & blues or open stage.

My show is just as professional and entertaining. My investment is probably higher than most bands put together.

Is it because with karaoke you have a choice to participate or not? With a band you just listen and dance. Karaoke is free. You pay to listen to bands or comedy. What makes the difference and who decided? Do they think karaoke doesn't require any talent? Is it because nobody plays the instruments? Is it because most karaoke shows do suck? Is karaoke considered the same as a DJ? Does it have to do with the fact that we just play recorded music?

The bars that have karaoke are no different than the bars having bands. Many times they are the same bars just doing it a different night.

I had to fight and explain to the newspaper the difference between open stage and karaoke. They used to list them under the same heading. I finally made them understand the difference.

What will it take to bring karaoke into the same status and to be equally treated as a legitimate form of entertainment?

Any suggestions?

I think live bands have a focus to entertain the patrons of the club - they play what makes the place rock - same with a good DJ.

With Karaoke entertaining the patrons is secondary to enjoying themselves by singing

You may have some good singers in the mix, but some KJs want everybody to get their fair turn

This results in crappyoke

The best karaoke occurs when you have competitions; generally a lot of good singers.

This results in entertained patrons 8)

To improve the image of karaoke some people should never step up to a mic :nonod:

But for us regular singers, they just make us sound so much better :P

This is not a problem here. Karaoke gets just as much respect from advertisers as bands or any other form of entertainment.

I really don't see the appeal of bands anyway. They are rarely very good and always take at least a twenty minute break out of each hour.

Maybe this is why I have replaced so many bands.

One of my bars has stopped having bands. people were complaining about having to pay $5 cover charge. The bands were getting the cover charge as payment. No out of pocket money for the bar owner.

He now makes more money by having a DJ. He pays the DJ and still gets more profit because the crowds are bigger.

$5 is pretty cheap. I paid that much 20 years ago.

If you think about it...who is thinking lets go listen to a band on Monday night or Tuesday night or Wednesday night or Thursday night and maybe even Sunday night?

Most people go to see bands to dance.

Bands only ever play on Fridays and Saturdays. So karaoke is a perfect thing to have on the off nights. Karaoke will draw people any night of the week. It's perfect.
