How not to do it

Post by mnementh »

Just come back from a Pub where a guy, who is not a particuarly good KJ, got stuffed by his kit and lack of knowledge showed why people that know what they're doing should run Karaoke.

I usually go out quite late and got into this bar about 10p.m. and noticed the KJ (?) sitting in front of his laptop, scratching his head.

I have a cardinal rule of "don't interfere unless asked", so I propped up the bar and supped my lager why various "compuetr gurus" tried to help out.

Eventually, the "KJ" sidled up and asked if I would have a look at his system to try and fault find what was going on.

System is laptop + EXTERNAL USB drive and God help me Karafun as the Karaoke player.

While I was paying attention to all the PC Gurus, I noticed not one had trie to see if the external drive was actually working, so first thing was to verify correct operation.

Step 1, switch off and switch back on the external drive.

Result, the laptop "saw" the drive and accessed it as normal.

Conclusion was that the drive and cable was "probably" O.K.

Opened My Compuetr, which none of the Gurus had tried and noted the drive was there. Good start.

Opened the drive and found two folders, one beaing background music and the other being Sunfly Karaoke tracks.

Opened the Sunfly folder and found it empty. Not good

Opened the background music folder and a corrupted folder message flagged up.

End result, a stuffed drive, with no backup and no more Karaoke.

Is this pathetic, or what?

No wonder KJ's get a bad name.

Even worse was that he had no means to get his laptop connected to the big flatscreen TV and used his PC as his viewer screen.

Dear Gos, I really despair of how Karaoke is going.

Depressed, really depressed. Didn't get drunk enough. Must try harder.

Actually, must have been drunker than I thought.

Please accept my apologies for the appalling spelling in my original post. Can only put it down to finger Dyslexia.

I tried to correct it this morning (UK time) but didn't know there is a 60 minute time limit on editing.

The 60 minute rule makes us all look like idiots when we re-read our posts and find really obvious spelling MYSTEAKS

Back to the show...

If you want to look like a totally unprofessional idiot don't have a back up.

How do you think the song folders on the hard drive ended up empty?

Don't know!

He professed ignorance, as usual.

When I worked in an I.T. service workshop at Dundee University, the number of people that brought in their PC's, with the statement "but I never did anything" after being informed their hard drives were trashed was unbelievable.

When asked if they had a backup, 99% didn't and that was really unforgivable, as the Uni provided a backup service for free.

It'll be interesting to see if he has his kit back upo and "running" anytime soon.
