TMI Equipment Web Page Info

Post by Bigdog »

I have to laugh at the "important" information on KJ websites.

What I like best is the "Our Equipment" page. Every KJ has one.

It usually starts with color pictures of the rig setup front and back with every black spaghetti wire and connectors hanging out so everyone can see how unprofessional it really looks.

Then the name dropping starts like you are expecting a manufacturers discount for using their stuff.

Nobody cares about your F**man power conditioner or the Kmart surge protector. They know you use electricity. For outside jobs I use a Honda 24 mega watt generator with....runs on regular gas.....Good idea to bring your own electricity to the field party 700 miles out of town. How many would have thought of that?

I have 6 cheap sounding $25 Blab Yak Blab rechargeable microphones with one receiver...

Yakkity Yak 8 channel model 743x..mixer with colored lights and twisty knobs that....

Now using a new Blag Wog Intel Duel core, 27 inch screen, 75 mega watt, 10,000 gig, state of the art laptop to play our music with Bobs sound card 465758464 model # 527396383 and 780 mega gig external hard drive thingy.....Fire wire ....clock speed sound barrior record breaking.....With Sax toms bobs hosting super multi singer scrolling up next .....blab yak...

My Blah Blah effects processor with 13 pre set delay and 12 reverb settings to.... snore yawn....

I use Gato..6 space plastic slant top rack box on wheels with hum frees and black 24 thread machine screws torqued down to Yak Yak foot pounds with my Sears Torque....

The finest Yak Snot #18 Guage Double Insulated Speaker wires with banana plugs and ....ends that make.....

My Monkey Blab speakers sound good in 6 languages....

I have an Ace Hardw....15 foot #12 gray extension cord with yellow ends I bought in 1988. I love it and highly recommend you get one.

My party/dance floor lights are green rated energy saving...income tax rebate ....ozone friendly ....duel control....blah blah..

I use 87 octane gasoline from Shel... in my 1991 four door...clunker..rebate....new 110 cranking amps ... battery ..towing a 6x9 single axel wood side trailer with green plastic rain tarps.....rubber tie downs..

Max Yak speakers stands that hold 75 pounds max.....tripod legs...colapsable disposable interchangeable ....locking ...

If you are doing it to brag to other KJs at least have equipment worth bragging about. Most KJs don't know what you're talking about. Do you really think a customer is impressed? When I see the pictures and descriptions, I'm not.

P.S. I have a smaller cheap Blab Yak system for meaningless parties.

If they actually do know anything about musical equipment they hired someone else.

Sorry but that's how they look and sound to me. Kinda ridiculous and funny.

Pretty funny, BD.

In all honesty, I don't know enough to know if what they have is good, bad or indifferent. All I care about is that is sounds good.

I agree. If you're going to have pictures, at least have the cords tied up or something. That's why I like our cabinet .., none of the wires show at all.

I learned early on that potential clients aren’t necessarily interested in what you have, or how big it is. They’re more interested in how you use it to their advantage. And in that, is where your sales pitch lies. 8)

I concur. If I can bring in enough paying customers to make the bar a nice profit for the evening they wouldn't care if I used a toy karaoke machine from Wal-Mart.

Some singers, on the other hand, do pay attention to the sound system information when deciding which karaoke show to attend.

wiseguy stole my thunder. While most venue owners only care about the bottom line, singers do care about the equipment. They also care about song selection and fair rotation.

I've never decided to go to a new karaoke venue because of the equipment they may, or may not, have. But I have decided not to go back because the equipment didn't sound right or the rotation wasn't what I considered fair.

It usually only takes on listen to tell whether you will be singing or not.

The web site promos list everything they ever bought in tiny detail. Listing many items that have nothing to do with the sound. A surge protector or power "conditioner" is not a part of any sound system.

I paid $450 for a surge protector, but I'm never going to tell anyone about it or advertize it as a major part of my sound system.

Listing a certain "name" company as your this or that. Those companies make cheap models and good top of the line models. A blanket statement like, I use ***** amplifiers, could mean you have the cheapest one known to mankind.

How does a certain type of rack box add to the sound? Years ago I knew KJs that had none of their equipment in a rack. They had the disc players stacked on each other and used DUCT TAPE to hold them together. Wires strung everywhere like an explosion in a black spaghetti factory. Nothing hidden to look neat.

I wouldn't list my equipment on a web site. The only thing people need to know is I have a "big one" and it sounds good. They will decide after they hear it if I was worth hiring. Not because I have a "Power Conditioner."

My system sucks, but my voltage is consistant.

Exactly. For the most part, the Singer only knows whether he/she likes what they hear.

So while the quality of the equipment makes it easier for the KJ to produce quality sound. The quality (expense, wattage, etc...) matters little when compared to the KJ's ability to use it effectively.

And a talented KJ/DJ/sound engineer may make some lousy equipment sound pretty good.

Ain't that the truth. I see examples of this all the time. Just this past weekend I took Saturday off to check out some of the other karaoke shows in the area. While in general there was mediocre equipment being used (with mediocre sound), the one KJ who had absolutely the worst sound had the best system. All the components were high quality and expensive and it sounded like a great big AM radio.
