It's the same thing in this country. The government decides which businesses and products are "necessary" and tax them accordingly. The license and other fees that are required to maintain a bar are much higher than they are for say a clothing or convenience store. Taxes on beer and liquor are continuously being raised out of proportion to other products. If we feel it's not a necessity we'll just tax the hell out of it until it ceases to exist.
It's just like the tobacco situation. It's being taxed out of existence and since tobacco users are in the minority nothing is being done about it. People who frequent bars are also in the minority. How long will it be until the bars are taxed out of existence? Then where will the karaoke trade be?
