Aside from the fact that they kill business...
With all of the TV talent shows lately...are your customers asking for contests?
Karaoke Kontests

If by "customers" you mean bar owners then the answer is yes. It's funny you mention it because my Thursday night (most busy) manager was inquiring about a contest and I quickly extinguished the idea. I have never liked karaoke contests even before I started hosting. Even if their done properly you can have several problems on your hands.
Happened last night.
Contest at the competition.
Beer reps put up $150 and bar owner kicked $100. The hot bartender did all the organization.
She gets 3 young girls to judge the singers.
Their only qualification...they listen to music. Don't sing...don't play an instrument...nothing but air between their ears. Bartender probably gave them free drinks to do it.
Guess who won. A bad female singer that sang country music...because that's what they like to listen to?
Not based on anyones talent...."we only like country music."
How much bad press do you think is being blabbed around town to anyone that will listen.
I got a lot of the disgruntled singers after the contest.
I can't wait until they do it again...please..

She also said that if the owner would have been a judge, he would have voted for the person that should have won.
I can not begin to tell you how much I think this situation SUCKS. She sucks and the owner sucks and the KJ sucks for allowing it.
Any bar owner that wants or thinks this is in any way good for their business is a nut case.
It's not good for the KJ either.
If I was the KJ and I was put in this postition, they just got themselves a new KJ.
NOBODY is going to ruin with my reputation. Especially over a stupid fixed contest.

That is the huge problem with contests. They are popularity contests; either the cong or the singer.
I disagree on one issue though. I don't think you have to sing or play an instrument to know what sounds good. Personally, I think anyone can judge who can honestly do it based on talent, and talent alone.
Maybe they can be locked in a back room so they can only hear the singers.

Anytime...years ago we had a contest we tried to get people that did have some kind of musical talent. Someone that knew they were judging talent not the song genre. Not a beauty contest. Because they knew what it takes. Not just your talent to twist the dial on a radio.
Being able to do something like singing well or playing an instrument helps you realise it's not easy.
Screwing someone with talent because they didn't sing country or aren't in the bar 24/7 isn't a qualification.
Hottie also said the person that should have won, never shows up until late at night. The person works steady 3-11--4-12 shift. So being there when her shift starts isn't possible. She's an air head. Too worried about how cute she looks.
Maybe she thought if they were there more they would leave a bigger tip for her. Maybe they don't tip her enough so they lost. Probably because she's too busy being cute to serve quickly enough. I've seen her in action when I worked that bar.
Regardless, the person that should have won is a very talented singer that everyone loves to hear sing. I can bet they were the best singer there that night.
It's not right. I'll help to spread the word about what really took place.

Most of the time contests are useless. Like Sabrina said, they're popularity contests and usually piss somebody off warranted or not. The bowling alley I recently started doing gigs at had a 6 week compettion that involved all 6 of their venues. The event was so unsuccessful that within 2 weeks after it was over I was called to replace the old kj. Even with a thousand dollar grand prize it didnt go over well.
