How many KJs have a "uniform" they wear when hosting a show.
Like embroidered or silk screened t-shirts or golf shirts?
Do you think it's important to wear items with your business name on them?
Do you sell shirts and hats to customers?
Karaoke Uniform
A friend of mine had a shirt made for me with my logo on it, however I don't wear it like a uniform. Generally I wear what is appropriate for where I'm playing. In the bars it's a nice pair of jeans and a T-shirt (sometimes my company logo, other music related T-shirts or I have T's from some of the bars I work at).
hummm...host or hostess...music...fun...uniform? jeans, t-shirts? this must be a guy thing. even tho i'm on the beach i still dress as nice as my budget allows. silks, satin and lots of bling! personally i think it's a reflection on how seriously you take yourself as a professional. i agree that there isn't enough fun musicly inspired and especially karaoke merchandise out there but really what's your image. do you want to dress like everyone else in the bar so you can relate or do you want to play it up to set youself apart. i find when i dress down i get alot more flack then when i dress up. does someone in a suit upon first sight command more respect than someone in a baseball hat, jeans and a t-shirt? I'm sure that's a personal thing.but personally music,fun,entertainment just lends itself to being a little more creative than a uniform with a logo on it unless you have a franchise and are being a bit stuffy about it. but to be fair to those who are loading and unloading equipment. i would imagine that would be a bit awkward in a suit or high heels.
I dress to look like most of the crowd. I never was a slave to fashion. I have shirts with embroided logos. I figure I should look like the person that is somewhat in charge. But I don't feel comfortable being over dressed. But the idea of someone being less likely to mess with someone in a suit could be right. But then again if you do need to fight you'll mess up an expensive suit.
Well I'll tell you this, if I showed up to my bar gigs in a suit, I'd be run out of the bars. That would get me way more flack. I still stand out from the crowd. Personally I'm usually wearing a cowboy hat and boots, right there most of the time its enough. Also when I say Jeans and a T shirt, note that I said nice jeans and T-shirt. In other words, quality clothes that are in good shape and don't look like every day slumming around clothes and usually with my logo or other music industry logos (Fender, Gibson, Mackie, JBL, Electro-Voice, etc). Most of the time that makes it pretty clear who's running the show.
Now if I do have a nicer gig, sure I dress it up a bit more. Weddings, class reunions, or other private parties are usually a suit. However, even then I ask the person hiring me what they think would be appropriate. Often times they scoff at the idea of me being their in a suit and encourage me to dress more casually.
