It can cost a small fortune to get set up with equipment and CD's, although you may be able to get started with a minimum of gear.

I say, if you love karaoke, go for it.

I've had some good results by modifying midi files (changing instruments etc.).
Some of them come close to sounding like a real band/orchestra playing.
Certainly better results than any "vocal removers" that I've tried.

Customise your show

Using your camera phone, take photos of your singers. Display the pictures of your singers (after adding a funny caption) with a program like MessageOke.
Have text scrolling across the top of the screen with humorous messages.
Show funny Flash files (downloaded from the internet).
